Two years ago  my cholesterol was 203. My doctor suggested I read a book by a cardiologist from Cleveland Health Clinic. I eagerly started eating vegan & exercising. In 4 months my cholesterol was 112.  I did this for health reasons, not weight, but one day realized my clothes were loose. My weight went from 185 to 140 and I have maintained that by eating consistently vegan. I'm 73, & 50 years ago my OB/GYN for first-born told me "no milk". Among other things, he said the national dairy assn. is one of the biggest lobbies in Washington and no one needs milk after their mother's milk. "Cows give milk to feed their babies".  My bouts with colds, running nose, pneumonia all stopped at that young age. I love Whole Living and am enjoying the recipes and stress-reducers!

hi mary,

i have high cholesterol and had high blood pressure. i have played with being a vegetarian for 20 years or so because my daughter has been one since she was 15. i finally made the leap a few years ago, with only an occasional relapse for a good piece of poached chicken. within a month, my doctor took me off the BP meds because it was back down to my normal from years ago. my cholesterol is better-under 200-and i hope it goes down more as i get better at the whole lifestyle and can actually stop eating that occasional chicken. i use only goat cheese because i am alergic to cow dairy anyway. my weight went down almost 30 pounds but has plateaued where i guess my body is happy-150. my clothes are comfortable and i feel soooo much better.

i was given a gift subscription to whole living and i too love the magazine.

best wishes,

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D. He was with the Cleveland Clinic for many years. My doc had asked the cardiologist on staff at Kaiser what to do about someone w/great HDL and Triglycerides but horrible LDL.  Apparently he told her to tell me to read this book.  I did and I followed it pretty much verbatim.  Thanks for asking ... and for the compliment.  It wasn't hard because we were living in a CCRC (continuing care retirement community) where we had meals included.  12 of us, who wanted to be vegan, met with the chef and he agreed to offer a vegan (sometimes vegetarian) meal on the menu daily. So it was easy.  When he had something I couldn't eat I just ate a lot of salad, but he was great at including grains and beans.  We move out - thought we were too young-at-heart for that place, so now I have to cook and I appreciate the recipes in this book...and online from different websites like Whole Living.  (I'm almost 74 but young at heart!)  Cheers!

I love Whole Living as well and listen to the radio show on Sirius every morning on my way to work and have picked up the magazines often.  Great ideas there!  I hope this isn't a faux pas but I would also like to recommend another website that offers such great recipes and healthy ideas.  Check this out!  http://www.cookusinterruptus.com/

Enjoy the ridiculously funny videos!  :)
