I've been looking for a safe sunscreen with the help of costmeticsdatabase.org.

I tried Badger, and even though I applied in 3 times in 5 hours, I was still burned.  Not to mention it smelled horrible and was so greasy.

I am using Aveeno Mineral Block until I can find something that I like better.

Is it possible to have a natural sunblock that goes on sheer??

I would appreciate any comments!

A natural sunscreen can be made with coconut oil (or with "V6" which is a carrier oil by Young Living Essential Oils) and Myrrh Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil by Young Living, also.  If you need help getting those products, you can go to www.youngliving.com/YL/DonnaJimBath

Hello,

Aubrey makes a nice sunscreen that smells Tropical and although is on the thicker side compared to those you are probably used to, it is definitely not as thick as Badger. I advised several people towards Aubrey after they were dissatisfied with Badger for it being so pasty and thick, and they were thrilled with the Aubrey. If you go in the water, you will see some white but I think of the natural sunscreens it is the best I've tried. Another nice one, although a little on the pricey side, is Mychelle. They make a suncreen that is SPF 28 and not pasty! Both sunscreens have much better ingredients than the majority out there.

Hope this helps!

It is possible!  After searching for the same thing for about two summers now, I stumbled upon a brand that I really like.  It goes on easily, almost sheer but not quite.  My daughter is dark-skinned and I am paper white, and this brand does not leave that strange bluish cast like other physical sunblocks with zinc oxide on either of us.  It is called Burn Out Eco-Sensitive Clean and Clear, and specifically look for the tube that says Clean and Clear as they do have other varieties.  I found it at a natural food store.  It is a bit pricey but went on well and most importantly, I did not burn when on a beach vacation for a week.  (And did I mention that I am super pale?  Yes, I think I did!)  It has no odor as well, which is a must for me.
Thank you Erin for bringing this topic up!  I'm always hounding my family to remember to use their sunscreen but have felt a little sheepish about seeing them load themselves up with more chemicals on their skin.  I tend to avoid the direct sun and protect myself with the clothing I wear or the time of day I choose to be outside.  I always use a moisturizer with SPF on my face and hands - every day.  I have been following the suggestions in this thread with interest and have noticed a couple of brands recommended that are available in my area.

The safest sunscreen on the market today is made by Melaleuca, Inc. Are you familiar with them? They are a eco-friendly manufacturer head quartered in the US. They make hundreds of products. BTW, be careful about most of these so-called product databases. Most of them are compacts, which are supported by the products on their websites. The various brands, companies pay to have their information on these databases. So, the information isn't always accurate.

Caution, readers!  While message boards such as these can be valuable sources of information and product reviews, there are also unfortunately often posts made by individuals with a vested interest in promoting a particular product.  With regard to the most recent post made by Carrie Fletcher, a quick internet search pulls her up as having professional connections to the company's product she is promoting.  While I realize that sometimes people seek employment with companies whose products they respect and use, by not revealing that she is connected with this company, it leaves a lousy aftertaste and a sense of being misled.  For me, even if the product were spectacular, business practices of this sort would lead me to avoid companies or their representatives that do not fully disclose their connections.  Beware of phrases such as "the safest sunscreen on the market today is..." which are in all likelihood unsubstantiated claims.  There's probably a sales pitch in there somewhere!  Also, for others' info, if the "compact" referred to is the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics compact, their website clearly states that companies signing the compact do not pay any fees to take part.  (And in case anyone is wondering, nope, I have no professional ties to any cosmetics companies!  I just liked the product I suggested earlier and my daughter and I didn't burn when using it!)

I've been using Alba's mineral sunscreens for a few years and have been happy with them. They go on releatively sheer and aren't too oily.

EWG (Environmental Working Group) publishes safe and effective sunscreens each year. You can go on their website and see the list. They also do an email newsletter that publishes helpful information monthly. www.ewg.org

I recommend products by Yes To! I just starting using them and think they're great. =) http://www.yestocarrots.com/category/spf?category_id=0000005

I burn incredibly easily and the only thing I've found that works for me is Surf-Vival SPF 30+ Mineral Sunscreen. It's fabulous. I still reapply every 1 1/2-2 hours, but I don't burn!!! I was surprised being it's only 30SPF, but it's truly amazing! Bonus points for being chemical and paraben free. Also, water resistant and doesn't give a white film like some mineral sunscreens :)

According to the Environmental working group the best and safest sunscreens contain either zinc or titanium. They should have no oxybenzone.  Some good ones rated by the ewg are: Tropical Sands, Aubrey Organics natural sun green tea sunscreen, Loving naturals.  See ewg.org for a list. My friend has tropical sands and she likes it I have loving naturals its good but it is white.

Image have a very good sun screen that has a tint so that its not white. Its not greasy and it smells wonderful. I am a medical esthetician and am very picky about my products.
