Hi everyone!

I'm a fan of mint chocolate, and now that it's winter there is plenty of hot chocolate stashed in my office.  Hot Mint Chocolate is my once-a-week indulgence, and the mint flavor is provided by throwing in a couple of peppermint candies in my cup.  I've noticed CVS' store brand peppermint candies are made with Splenda.

I know Splenda has it's lovers and it's haters, but what's the deal with sugar free candy?  Do you think this is acceptable in moderation? 

Just curious to hear thoughts on the subject.

I personally have no problem with sugar substitutes like Splenda. While sugar is fine in moderation, switching to some substitute probably won't cause the health problems people claim. In my opinion, these problems only happy if one consumes a lot of the product (like Splenda); in that case, it's no better than eating a lot of sugar. Either one you consume, it's better to just cut back and not have it as often.

I prefer Stevia, though, but only in small amounts; it's VERY sweet, but that means that just a little goes a long way, especially in tea!
Hi Shayna -- thanks for your reply. I agree with your assessment about sugar (or sugar substitutes) in moderation. I've been following the sugar debate over at Nutrition Data, and here in Whole Living (http://community.wholeliving.com/forum/topics/the-sugar-debate-arti...).

I myself use Stevia in my iced coffees (I buy organic from Trader Joe's) and boy are you right, it is sooo sweet! I almost can't describe the taste, but I guess overly sweet would be it. I can't stand putting in more than 1/100th of a teaspoon in my cup. :)

Have you tried Truvia yet? That's now making appearances in the big supermarket chains. Not sure what the ingredients are, and while it's not as pure as the plant, I'm wondering if the taste is not as severe?

How is the weight loss going? I identify a lot with your struggle, girl.
Oh, I hadn't even seen that thread! Thanks for sharing it. Like that discussion implies, it IS quite a debate. There never seems to be a clear answer, which can make things difficult!

Exactly! But despite it's overly-sweet taste, it's actually nice in that way because you can use way less. Stevia can be expensive, but when you consider how much you use, it's actually not too bad. :) I also use Stevia in drinks, especially tea. I also used to make drinks with these liquid Stevia things that my mom brought home years ago. I can't remember the name, but there were these little bottles with eyedroppers that had different flavors, like Root Beer and other common flavors, that you mixed with water. I think they were completely calorie-free but had a lot of flavor with only a few drops. Let me see if I can find something about them... Aha! It was a bit pricey, but super-tasty!

I think we have Truvia (my mom works in a store and sometimes gets free samples, so we get a lot of random new things, haha), but I don't think I've tried it yet. I'll see if I can find it and share the ingredients... Let's see, it says that the ingredients are: Erythritol, rebiana, natural flavors. I'm not sure what any of that means. Maybe you do? haha

Haha, thanks for asking! At the moment, not too well because my eating is thrown way off. I just had my wisdom teeth removed on Friday, so consuming anything is difficult. However, it is helping me to go a whole day at home without over-eating. Maybe it'll help me to eat less, since I'll have already done it. :) I'm also hoping to start outdoor exercise (as seen in the latest Whole Living issue that I just got in the mail!) since it seems like a lot of fun and a good challenge.
