I can manage a 1/2 mile swim but I'm very sloooooooow. Any tips on how to get faster?

And I've been training in a pool. What are differences between pool swimming and ocean swimming that I can expect? Hoping some tri veterans out there can offer their two cents!

As for getting faster, I might not be the right person to give you advice. I got just a little bit faster by swimming more and incorporating drills that focus on form, but I'm by no means a fast swimmer. There are a few differences between pool and ocean: you're most likely swimming in a wetsuit, which helps out with buoyancy (good!). There are most likely waves and currents you have to deal with (bad!). There are a lot of other swimmers that may kick you or swim over you (bad!). You don't have the side of the pool to hold on to and take a mini-break (you are allowed to hold on to kayaks or buoys if you get tired).
Before I can offer you advice I have to learn how to swim properly!  (haha!)  This is on my bucket list and I'm seriously thinking of enrolling in some classes in September!  Right now I just paddle about!  I've always wanted to know how I can swim laps properly and get a terrific workout that does not jar the body as hard as running does!
Swimming lessons are a great idea even if you know how to swim. I'll be signing up for a few, so I can become a more efficient swimmer.
