I won't be a mom for a long time but I'm more than interested in giving them the best life possible.

We are currently trying to start a family and any forum that can provide hints and guidance in living more eco friendly especially in this next big step in our lives would be beneficial!

Just thought I'd say hello. My son is about 16 months old. I love the idea of giving him a healthy enviroment to grow in. I'm not fanatic about it though. I just don't have the finances to do so. But I do have my own organic garden and try to limit the nasty chemicals we find all over. I just try not to panic over things. I've found the stress levels just aren't worth it. When I can make the small changes like buying organic instead of the regular fruit I do. I'm trying to re-train myself the three r's (reduce, reuse, and recycle) as well. Especially the Reduce. I consume too much in so many ways.

Being greener was my 2007 resolution, and I have been working at it ever since... I too need to work on the reduce & reuse... I am an avid consumer and I want to change that! Kudos Katrina for the garden!!

Thanks for the kudos Melissa. I do have to say the garden isn't strict organic. I don't worry too much about my seeds being untreated etc. but I don't put anything extra on it. I have my compost and some bloodmeal and fish emulsion fertilizers and that's it. I did get a new composter for Christmas. It uses the compostable bags. Wow is that easy! I'm loving it. So much nicer than the old way. Looks better on my counter too.

Hi eco-moms! I am a mother of a 20 month old daughter and expecting our second in June. We live in beautiful Vancouver, BC where organic and local food is abundant. It is also fairly easy for us to recycle just about anything. I do my best to provide organic, whole food to my family and we eat very little meat. In 2009 we focused on consuming less- to save money and to ensure we weren't just buying something because we wanted it but that we really needed it. I have adjusted to not having a brand new wardrobe every few months and having only a few, very good toys for my daughter. I am excited to do another challenge but mine will be slightly different since I am pregnant. I look forward to having a garden of my own, so Katrina, please let us know all your tips!

Cheers, Kimberley

Kimberly, I'll help where I can with the garden. Last year was my first garden that was anything other than a couple of pots on the back porch. It was also the first time we owned our own house so I could put in the garden. It is as organic as I can economically do. I don't worry about non-treated seeds or anything unless they are the same price as an organic counter-part. Then I purchase the organic and heirloom seeds. Being in Vancouver you should be able to grow lots more than I can. Your winters seem to be a bit milder than ours over here in Montana. Let me know what I can do to help. I will if I can.

I get to start seeds for my garden in about 3 weeks. Yippee! I'm only not starting yet because I'll be travelling and don't think my seedlings would fair well.

Oh and my son will get to help me this year. That I can't wait for! He loves to eat tomatoes right out of the garden and to play in the dirt. One of the main reasons I don't put anything other than compost on my garden. I am gonna try copper sheets around the edges to try to cut down on the number of slugs this year. Beer works well, but I can't remember to keep the traps refreshed.

Hello Eco-Moms! I am the mother of two boys (!)- 4 years and 19 months, and trying to talk my husband into a third...:) We live in a small town in Vermont. We have had a organic garden for the last three years and last year, my 4yr old really got into it. This year, we are going to start some tomato seedlings indoors so we don't have to purchase them. Also, I am going to give my kids a little plot of their own and let them choose what they'd like to grow. We'll also be starting a compost this spring (long winters in VT) and I can't wait!!! Any suggestions on compost bins/manufacturers? I'd love any tips about home composting!
