India exhibit

The India exhibit was a wedding pavilion, or mandap. As I learned, the fire is the witness at a Hindu wedding.

True Confessions

Here's how Week 4 is going: Today one of our graphic designers gave me a Swedish Fish wearing a little Skittle for a helmet, and I am looking at it longingly. Why does candy have to be so dandy? It's so dandy that I ate three or four of that Swedish Fish's brothers today, plus a couple pieces of "fruit" -- flat, sweet-and-sour jelly concoctions shaped like apples and oranges, the real food that I should be eating instead. So today hasn't been such a great day. But one thing I'm figuring out…See More

Getting It Off My Chest

Posted on April 1, 2010 at 1:59pm 0 Comments

Whenever I get a cold, I get it the same way every time: It starts with a sore throat, then decamps to my chest. Now I'm at the stage where my chest is so heavy, I feel like I'm trapped under a Buick Electra. I'm sure everyone in this office appreciates the way I'm hacking like a consumptive donkey!

I post this not just to bring us all closer, but to ask whether anyone has any home remedies for chest congestion. I'm up for anything!

Inspiration Point

Posted on March 31, 2010 at 6:00pm 0 Comments

It never fails to amaze me, the things that inspire people; I love it when a fashion designer will turn a movie or a decade or a 17th-century Dutch painting of fruit into a collection of coats and dresses. I still fondly remember that first episode of Project Runway, in which Jay McCarroll made that silver frock out of the Chrysler Building.

How Do You Like Them Apples?

Posted on March 24, 2010 at 12:17pm 2 Comments

I was just chowing down on my apple and it occurred to me that I have

not bought anything but Fujis since I discovered them five years ago.

Is there any apple more perfect? Just crisp enough, sort of sweet,

sort of tart.

But maybe I'm in a produce rut. Does anybody have any kind of apple they'd recommend for somebody who likes it crisp? (Sweet-sour ratio is much less important.)

More Mindful Housekeeping

Posted on March 13, 2010 at 5:30pm 5 Comments

I wrote a story for the April issue on my struggle to love housecleaning, and wanted to give a shout-out here to Zen priest Karen Maezen Miller, without whom that story could not have happened. Seriously, interviewing her was like calling up Yoda. Before we hung up I told her I was so glad I'd just happened to find her book (Hand Wash Cold, out in a couple of weeks), and she said brightly, "That's dharma!" Anyway, I greatly…
