Top Ten Food Allergy List-In Honor of Food Allergy Awareness Week

This week is Food Allergy Awareness Week and for what it's worth, as a mother of a son with severe food allergies, I compiled a top ten list of things I have learned along the way, about myself, the process, and myself in the process. 1. The process sometimes stinks, but you have to be vigilant.2. Don't expect the world ( and by that I mean the average public) to fully comprehend your fear because most of them don't. Once you release that anger, you will be  more productive.3. Don't approach…See More

Grappling with the “Grapple”

What is a grapple you ask? Well, I assure you, it isn’t anything I made up and it's my latest nutritional pet peeve. As I was grocery shopping the other day, gathering my brightly colored produce,  (it always makes me happy to see a cartful of produce ranging in the greens, purples, oranges, reds and yellows) when low and behold I noticed in the apple aisle, a package with four “grapples.”  My curious nature got the best of me and I just had to know what the heck a grapple was. Sorry, if I’m a…See More

"Hi Rachel, I can totally relate to this post!  I kicked the Splenda habit myself about 2 years ago.  During the 2011 Whole Living 28-day Challenge, I also went off of sugar.  Like you, I'm now using honey as my sweetener if I…"

Living the NOT so Sweet Life…Kicking the Splenda Habit

My husband decided to quit coffee! Well, that’s just CRAZY talk! As his caffeine enabler, I was mighty upset when he ditched the happy juice…and he did it on vacation! It wasn’t a purposeful act, mind you.  He just wasn’t in the mood for coffee in the a.m.  I, however, was giddy with anticipation that the resort we stayed in had a Starbucks in the lobby.  Holy coffee beans Batman, a Starbucks store right in the lobby! Well, that’s just genius and I gladly shelled out the $2.07 for a tall blonde…See More

Rustic Matzah Pizza

Hello, my fellow Passover sufferers.  We have exactly nine more Passover meals (not including any ancillary snacks) to go.  We are in the home stretch, the happy hump of day of Passover, almost at the end, you look in your closets, and you realize, “Wow, I sure bought a lot of matzo meal!”  Sometimes, we panic purchase, thinking we are going to bake, or cook, or create something on Passover that will be revolutionary!  Perhaps we just buy too much and wind up throwing it away or saving it for…See More

The BEST Passover Choco Chip Allergy Free Cookies

Hello to all of those who are celebrating the eight days of affliction…sorry, I mean Passover. As most of you know, Passover is my least favorite holiday because of all the food restrictions in our house.  There’s egg and nut allergies which we all know are the cornerstone of Passover cooking, not to mention that my daughter doesn’t eat meat.  Since we don’t eat rice, soy or beans on Passover, she is now pretty limited, which is why under strict supervision and visceral protocol, I allow eggs…See More

In Pursuit of the Vegan Matzo Ball

This article was published two years ago in the Baltimore Jewish Times, but I found it appropriate to those who are celebrating the holiday of Passover!  It's an anecdotal look at those who suffer through food allergies on Passover.  Enjoy and feel free to visit my blog, www.lifeisgoodlickthebowl.blogspot.com …See More

These ain’t Your Traditional Hamantashen(Contemporary flavors and allergy free)

Here it is…the allergy free, awesome, delicious, contemporary flavored hamantshen recipe. You asked for it and I delivered. I decided to go a little funky on the flavors this year. It’s not that I don’t love a good ole apricot triangular pastry, it’s just that, I wanted something a little more contemporary, new, refreshing and I instantly thought of chocolate and lemon. They go well together, and they taste great separately, so roll up your sleeves, here we go…Lemon Hamentashen ½ block silken…See More

Beating the Bender

You know how life just seems to get overwhelming? You know how you’re supposed to take deep breaths, go for a walk, pamper yourself, or mutter encouraging mantras to get you through the drama? You know how after you try all of those things, and you’re still feeling affected, you figure that nothing beats an eating bender? You know how you go on a bender with all the self-loathing that goes along with it, but you know you’re going to come out of it the next day stronger and more determined not…See More

Hi, I am Rachel and I am a mother of two.  I am also a freelance writer specifically regarding food allergies/nutrition and recipes.  I stumbled into this profession when my youngest was diagnosed with nut and egg allergies three years ago and our lives turned topsy turvy.

Since then, I have been published in Washington Family Magazine, Atlanta Parent Magazine, Washington Post (also featured on their food blog regarding holiday allergy free recipes) , NPR, and Baltimore Jewish Times.  I have had personal essays published in the Post, and Moment magazine and have written for online websites such as GreenDivaMom.com, thejewishhostess.com, Momaboard.com, and featured on Vegkitchen.com (Eggless Challah)

My mantra over the years has become...When Life Hands You Lemons...Make an Egg-Free Lemon Cake.  Prior to my son's allergies, I was not a baker, in fact, my kids would beg me not too and even the ducks at our local pond squawked at my banana bread in disgust.  Sometimes, our mission in life find us, whether we ask for it or not, and it's always amazing to realize the inner strength we find when faced with a mission.

My blog entitled lifeisgoodlickthebowl.blogspot.com stemmed from this mission, but it became more than just food allergies.  Instead, it has become an anecdotal commentary on all things life throws at us.  It's a mother's chronicle of life with a soon to be tween, girl drama, weight issues, bathing suit phobias, organic vs. conventional, advocating for my son, recipes, nutrition, and just whatever we have to combat on a daily basis, in a humorous, motivating, and undeniably realistic manner.

I hope you will take a look.  www.lifeisgoodlickthebowl.blogspot.com.
