Amanda Etty commented on Rachel Packer's blog post 'Why Do We Drop the Ball After the Ball Drops?'Hi, I am Rachel and I am a mother of two. I am also a freelance writer specifically regarding food allergies/nutrition and recipes. I stumbled into this profession when my youngest was diagnosed with nut and egg allergies three years ago and our lives turned topsy turvy.
Since then, I have been published in Washington Family Magazine, Atlanta Parent Magazine, Washington Post (also featured on their food blog regarding holiday allergy free recipes) , NPR, and Baltimore Jewish Times. I have had personal essays published in the Post, and Moment magazine and have written for online websites such as GreenDivaMom.com, thejewishhostess.com, Momaboard.com, and featured on Vegkitchen.com (Eggless Challah)
My mantra over the years has become...When Life Hands You Lemons...Make an Egg-Free Lemon Cake. Prior to my son's allergies, I was not a baker, in fact, my kids would beg me not too and even the ducks at our local pond squawked at my banana bread in disgust. Sometimes, our mission in life find us, whether we ask for it or not, and it's always amazing to realize the inner strength we find when faced with a mission.
My blog entitled lifeisgoodlickthebowl.blogspot.com stemmed from this mission, but it became more than just food allergies. Instead, it has become an anecdotal commentary on all things life throws at us. It's a mother's chronicle of life with a soon to be tween, girl drama, weight issues, bathing suit phobias, organic vs. conventional, advocating for my son, recipes, nutrition, and just whatever we have to combat on a daily basis, in a humorous, motivating, and undeniably realistic manner.
I hope you will take a look. www.lifeisgoodlickthebowl.blogspot.com.

This week is Food Allergy Awareness Week and for what it's worth, as a mother of a son with severe food allergies, I compiled a top ten list of things I have learned along the way, about myself, the process, and myself in the process.
1. The process sometimes stinks, but you have to be vigilant.…

What is a grapple you ask? Well, I assure you, it isn’t anything I made up and it's my latest nutritional pet peeve. As I was grocery shopping the other day, gathering my brightly colored produce, (it always makes me happy to see a cartful of produce ranging in the greens, purples, oranges, reds and yellows) when low and behold I noticed in the apple aisle, a package with four “grapples.” My curious nature got the best of me and I just had to know what the heck a grapple…

My husband decided to quit coffee! Well, that’s just CRAZY talk! As his caffeine enabler, I was mighty upset when he ditched the happy juice…and he did it on vacation! It wasn’t a purposeful act, mind you. He just wasn’t in the mood for coffee in the a.m. I, however, was giddy with anticipation that the resort we stayed in had a Starbucks in the lobby. Holy coffee beans Batman, a Starbucks store right in the lobby! Well, that’s just genius and I gladly shelled out the $2.07 for a tall…
