"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"  It's one of the first questions adults ask you as a child and it never goes away.  You get into high school and they ask you, "where do you want to go to college?" You get to college and they ask you "what do you want to major in?"  You pick your major and they ask "where do you want to work?" (and rarely do you end up where you thought you would). Everyone expects you to know what your life plan is by the age of 5...and very few people are ever truly…See More

Lessons Learned

I have had a couple new culinary adventures this week, i.e. trying to cook something I have never cooked before.  Here is the score:1.  Homemade Greek Yogurt: 1  Me: 0This one may have been because I could not give the yogurt the ample time it deserved...but I got a tip from a friend whose mother makes it all the time, so I will prevail next time. Lesson here: try, try again.2.  Pumpkin: 1  Me: 0I have no plan to ever cook with sugar pumpkins again.  It took me almost an hour to open, cut and…See More

Fall

Normally I really like Fall.  I love the temperature and the leaves, the smells and the foods.  Come end of September I think, it's time to make soups or roast some vegetables. It's time to break open the oven and bake, filling the kitchen with warmth and comfort.  But now that I am in the city, I love this season even more.  Growing up in a suburban city, you went to the grocery store...farmers markets were towns away, and you would have to drive to get there.  It was a planned activity, not…See More

My New City

I grew up in a suburban city...houses, backyards, driveways...  I lived in the same house until I graduated college and got a job.  Growing up I had very conflicting ideas of where I wanted to live in the future.  Either a city, where I could take trains and not have to drive (I hate sitting in traffic) or a little stone town in Italy (or someplace where I could have a garden). I just moved into my new apartment two weeks ago and it's in a city (or just outside of 'the city')!  It's loud, full…See More
