Black Bean Brownies

Have I already turned some of you off with the title of this post? I get it- it sounds weird, and the comment I've received the most from people in my life is "why would you want to ruin perfectly good brownies." Of course I had a great response planned for this:)

I'm lactose intolerant, so I've cut out a lot of desserts…

Urban Naturalist - Honey & Lemon

My husband has been coughing the last couple of days. I'd like to like it before it becomes something more. This morning I gave him a hot cup of water with the juice from half a lemon and a lot of local honey. It's great for breaking up respiratory stuff and the local honey can help strengthen the body's immune system to local pollens. But he'll also take some Ecchinacea and Zinc.

I dare you! I double dare you!

Do those words bring back memories from your childhood, either good or bad? I can remember times when I was afraid to do something and my friends would say I dare you! Sometimes the fear came from me knowing I was going to do something I really should not be doing and I needed to walk away from the dare. Other times, however, the dare made me push through some fear that was internal and do something I could not have envisioned me doing before. What brought me back to this place of thinking…

Oven Roasted Broccoli

As I've said many times on this blog, I'm in no way a great cook, and I don't find cooking enjoyable! However, in an effort to try to increase my health & wellness in ALL areas of my life, I have tried to add healthier recipes (with a few fun ones thrown in!) to my weekly schedules.

Here are a few of the other things I've…

Sometimes Courage Is The Quiet Voice...

Sometimes we need to repeat a quote over and over in a given situation in order to change our thinking. This is one quote that I have loved for many years, and have repeated to myself in some difficult situations.

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try…

The Proper Function of Man...

This is the 3rd post in my series of quotes. Make sure to check out the other ones this week:)

This is a quote that I found back in January of 2007, and remained written on a post it note on my computer until recently.

The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to…

The True Poetry of Life

This is the 2nd post in my week of quotes! Make sure to check out all the posts this week, and share your own favorite quote(s) as well!

Nothing will sustain you more potently than the power to recognize in your humdrum routine, as perhaps it may be thought, the true poetry of life.
-Sir William…

Corny smooth

After watching a video recently about a family that had cut their non-recyclable trash down to almost nothing, I wanted to move in the same direction. I've been using salt, baking powder, and vinegar as cleaning products for a while now, but I've added salt as a body scrub and ground cornmeal as a face scrub. I can buy these items in bulk and put them in containers, thus reducing my waste.  I have found grapeseed oil to be a nice facial moisturizer, and it's in my pantry! Getting rid of tubes… Read more

Rut-Roh - nice saveeeee.

So today is the day I almost fell off the bandwagon. How horrible would that have been - day 3 and epic fail?

Alas, Dear Hubby came to my rescue. Due to my busy schedule here at school, yesterdays food resulted fruit in the morning and lunch at 11:30 (which was delicious, left over salmon) and...wait for it....

yep those are the sounds of crickets - that was IT. I had packed the almond chicken soup to come with me along with a bag full of almonds, walnuts,…

Day 2 - WOOP!

Good Morning,Whole Living!

Today is day two of my detox program. Yesterday went very well for me - I ended up eating the fruit in applesauce tahini sauce, a bowl of strawberries, a handful of almonds, and broiled salmon with broiled sweet potatoes. Even Hubby enjoyed the dinner (although he supplemented it with many more calories since he works outside for 12+ hours a day.)

I did a really nice segment of yoga yesterday also...a little sore this morning but it's a…

Urban Naturalist - Thyme

I can't wait to plant some herbs outside. Even years I don't have time to plant a full garden, I put out some herbs. Italian herbs are my favorite: Oregano, Rosemary, Basil. But if I had to choose an all time favorite it would be Thyme. Thyme is useful in more ways than just cooking. A tincture can be made for use in cleaning and diffusing in the home. Thyme is antiviral, antiseptic and antibiotic. It kills germs and repels insects. But, of course, the very best aspect is its flavor. If only it… Read more

Love thyself!

It really doesn’t matter what faith tradition you explore. When I look across ancient wisdom writings and contemporary writings on spirituality, I find myself coming across some very basic and simple teachings about loving one’s self. Over the last few years, I have been making notes about things I have learned to do and am working on doing in my life to bring myself to that place of unconditional self-love. the other day, I started organizing some of my notes, part of my spring cleaning…

Procrastination

I am feeling just a small measure of triumph. With just four months left to go on my maternity leave, I am realizing that I will have to reintroduce a bit of structure into my life. Once back at work, I won't have endless hours to procrastinate on cooking, cleaning, working out or connecting with friends and family. This morning, I put off working out during my little one's morning nap. And then I took a nap. In my defense, it was probably my first nap in 4 months and my little one had a…

Never too late to start...right?

Welp folks, today would be my first day doing the 28-day-challenge. Yes, I see that I am about oh, three months late but nonetheless I'm motivated and ready for it! I've already had a lovely glass of warm water with lemon as I enviously watched dear hubby down his 2nd cup of black coffee. I believe that is what I will miss the most - wonderful, black, energizing coffee. As a graduate student I have come to worship the gods of java,…
