We Deserve This!

I am drinking my breakfast as I write this post – I am still in love with those mango-avocado smoothies from Week 1!

I mentioned a few posts back that I had found Jillian Michael’s 30-Day Shred workout at my local library. Well, the dvd has already been returned (we only get a… Read more

Journal Week 3, Day 4 - TH

Today was a nice quiet day. I felt like I was taking my time and in the end I accomplished what I needed to get done. So I felt good. I worked, cooked, put away the dishes in the dishwasher and washed another load. I need to slow down. I also need more sleep. That's my next item on the to do list. How can I get more sleep?

Bad news, the dance class that I was going to start on Thursdays, cancelled due to low enrollment. Now I need to motivate myself to exercise at home or find… Read more

Scene 4: Finding The Time

I'm not a procrastinator because I never embraced the concept of putting something off: it's not going to disappear, so I might as well get it over with. "To-Do" lists are so long these days, completing a task is simply one less thing for me to think about. And of course there is the satisfaction of seeing a line struck-through my hasty scrawl.

At the office this determination is to my detriment because it usually means I'm working after the agreed quitting time. Most tasks are never… Read more

Week 3 meditations - or not.

I have this over my desk for my breathing exercises. I find it very useful. As much as I have always loved my morning meditations, I have found it difficult to fit in the time. Making smoothies, prepping more mindful lunches, doing our before work routines, exercising, etc. has taken a rather large chunk out of the morning. I don't like meditating in the evening as much so it's been tougher to fit it in. I feel like my priorities are somewhat… Read more

Detox, my way...

Kudos to all of you guys who completed the WBAP detox. I, on the other hand, am far to picky an eater to have followed the it (veggies and most fruits gross me out, terrible...I know).

However, I have vowed to detox my diet in the following ways: 1) Banish white flour (only whole grains)

2) No sugar drinks (this is huge, I usually have 1+ soda a day)

3) Delete caffiene

This may not be quite as ambitious as the WBAP detox (a.k.a. smoothie-palooza) but… Read more

A Blank Page but a Full Head

The best part of journaling? Buying a beautiful new journal and a really glidey pen.

{My stash of blank journals}

If you’ve ever done or read The Artists Way, Julia Cameron suggests journaling exactly 3 pages, which is absolutely brutal, but strangely enough works for me. I spend the first page going on and on about what a huge loser I am, the second page thinking I’ll never… Read more

Saturday is Free Yoga Day USA! Find a Class Near You

This week's Action Plan checklist focuses on the strength-training aspect of fitness -- but that doesn't mean strictly lifting weights. There are lots of ways to use your own body as the resistance you need to tone and sculpt, one of which is yoga. Which is why Yoga Day USA fits in so perfectly with the end of Week 3.

First Things First: Free Yoga!

This Saturday, yoga studios all over… Read more

WEEK 3 - FEELING GREAT

I still have a lot of energy, and have noticed I can move a bit more when I exercise, I think I hurt my shoulder back in November while exercising, it still hurts and limits what I can do, will be getting some x-rays to see what is wrong with it. so for now I have to concentrate on exercises, that don't require the use of my left arm.

Well I had my dr's appointment yesterday since I stopped taking Januvia on the 8th and noticed that my body controls my sugar levels on it's own, so as… Read more

Journal week 3, Day 3 - Wed

Hi,

This week has gone well. I am starting to have cravings in the evening. The first 2 weeks, I was surprised that I wansn't even hungry. I am trying to be good by reaching for nuts, carrots, and dried pears to snack on. However, that's not enough. I keep wanting to have something more. Not sure what, but my body wants a snack. I don't get cravings at work. I have been smart about keeping healthy snacks at my desk. I am wondering if I don't get cravings at work, becuase I am busy… Read more

plod #2

I seem to be hitting a doldrums, but I am aware that (1) doing something is better than nothing, and (2) I can repeat what I've succeeded at before!

The rain shouldn't really stop me from exercising, but being a southern Californian, I'm not prepared for walking in wet weather. I like the beautiful images people are posting. Here are 2 from our backyard in summer:

The gym… Read more

Meditation...

First, fair warning: I learned how to insert hyperlinks to regular text like all the other ladies have been doing, and I may have gone a little overboard in my excitement!

Not unlike Sarah Rose I really like nature imagery and find it calming. A friend noticed recently that I really like sunset photos (he had a lot of them that I "liked" on Facebook),… Read more

Mindful Eating and Homemade Coffee Scrubs

I may be the odd one out, but I really don’t like showering. My husband LOVES showers and takes long, hot ones every morning. Me, I’m in, I wash, I’m out. That’s it. That being said, I was intrigued by the idea of a coffee body scrub in the at-home spa feature on Body and Soul. I’m always looking for things to make showering less of a chore, and… Read more

The time has come, the walrus said, to talk of bigger...arms?

I have always been very against weight training. Blessed - or cursed - with naturally muscular arms and legs (at least compared to the women of my family), my gym time has always focused on blasting the fat off my muscles, not enlarging them. When forced to lift for lacrosse in high school, I begrudgingly did it with the fear that my arms would blow up and make me look like those crazy (oiled up) body builders. Of course, the training was never even remotely intense enough to conjure those… Read more

Day 16 - Completely fallen off!

Arg....that's all I have to say about this week so far.

Breakfast - Smoothie

Lunch - 1/2 chicken breast,1/2 c brown rice, carrots + celery

Snack - cadbury creme egg :(

Dinner - green drink

Last night I had several scoops of haagen dazs, some french fries and popcorn - NOOOOO!! I also ended up getting a bladder infection - maybe due to the increased alkalinity of my diet? My stomach is now so overbloated because of all the water I have to drink to get rid of… Read more

tentatively pleased

With myself, for turning my bad behavior binge around. Yoga yesterday, yoga this morning, a gingerberry kombucha, ginger peach pom smoothies and large mugs of grassy green tea. Avoiding refined things, encouraging movement. So far so good again! Maybe another yoga tonight.

Scene 3: Eating Mindfully

I really love that phrase. And what logical practice for this project in which I Make Better. I talk mindfully (careful not to offend), I drive mindfully (careful not to increase the insurance premium), I even walk mindfully (careful not to, you know, trip and fall). Why had I never thought to apply this concept to eating? Because the Plan is here to teach me, of course.

I like to think of the Plan as a project: the project to end all projects. The thesis paper before I graduate with… Read more

week three- day three- back on track

Well it's been chaotic here lately. I moved and started a new job, and started a new semester at two different universities in the same week. But I have still been eating fairly well, I will admit to eating several spoonfuls of ben and jerry's. But I am been really active, especially while moving, which I think should count for two days of activity. So I have been slacking in the meditation department, but I would like to catch up. Besides that I am just getting by, day to day, staying… Read more

what a week

I am still getting used to eating better and taking the time to exercise so to add to my million reasons not to follow through I slip and fall causing a bruised hip and seriously bruised pride. Had to fall in public...I hate rain right now. Since the powers that be have reminded me that I am not 20 any more and don't bounce back quite so quickly I realize just how important this challenge is for me. I need to be healthy. I wont let this be a reason to stop but I think I may have to cut back on… Read more

my joints don't ache

on the outside of my right hip and the groin of my left hip have been giving me so much trouble that I was seriously thinking I couldn't dance anymore...Tragedy for me! I gave up the little bit of coffee that I mix with my heaping teaspoons of Teccino and at the end of the detox week "no more aches"! To prove it I had a bit of coffee/teccino yesterday and my right hip started acting up again....Soooo I figured out that coffee doesn't work. I'm sad, but so happy I found out what is wrong. I… Read more
