Dinner: Garden to Plate

I’ve posted a few blogs about my garden this summer and my family continues to enjoy eating dinner that consists of as many items from the garden as possible. This week we decided to have grilled chicken salads for dinner one night and we wanted to see how much of the food from the garden we could add to the salad. It was amazing! I have mesclun and arugula growing which was the base of our salads. I added yellow pear, black cherry, and red cherry tomatoes…all of which taste like candy…

My food does not need a passport

Have you ever wondered where your food comes from?

Maybe I am different or just plain curious, but it is a thought I always have as I walk the aisles of my supermarket. Where does all of this come from?

How many miles away were some of these items produced and shipped from?

Nothing makes me…

The First One

Down and dirty.  I've started a few posts, based off outlines I'd put together, and realised the subjects are so full that I need to break them up into posts that I would want to read.

So this is to get started.  Tomorrow I race.  It's getting late, I'm tired, sleeping a bit late and having a slow morning to enjoy coffee and breakfast would be lovely.  Instead, I'm finishing putting my kit together, making sure I've got water, food, snacks, sun block, money, ID, ICE numbers,…

My Eating Goal This Week

In New Hampshire it is often a waiting game for fruits and vegetables to be ready from the garden. Every night I go out to the garden with my children to see how things have changed overnight. It really is amazing to see the transformation that takes place so quickly. After our trip out there last night I realized that I have a fair amount of vegetables that can be harvested already. My goal this week…….use at least one if not two items from my garden at dinner time.

My menu so far…

Fruits Of My Labor

This year my garden has proven to be different than last year. Some things that grew so well last year seem to be struggling and some of the new items I’ve tried are doing rather well. I have so many green strawberries and literally only one red. I’m doing something wrong but I have no idea what!

Anyway,…

One Step Closer to the Finish Line

This was a morning ripe for a fitness failure. I slept terribly last night, kept awake by a hacking/congested cough from a cold. My body was already tired from fighting the cold, so running five miles this morning didn't even seem possible. My cough was so bad that it even kept my husband awake. He spent part of the night on the couch and around 2:45, we swapped places. We ended up sleeping much later this morning than planned.

When I finally gave up on sleep around 6:30 this…

Greening My Life: Part 1 Beauty Products

I’m on a mission to “green” every part of my life. This is clearly not something that will happen overnight and it will take a lot of adjustments over a long period of time. This is something I’ve wanted to do for awhile but it is overwhelming for me to even figure out where to begin.  I read a few books that detail all the things that you currently have and what the problem is with them. One night I literally had to stop reading because I started to freak out about all the stuff in my house…

Falling Down

My husband and I went for a light, easy run this morning. We headed to a nearby park to observe a TRX bootcamp class and get some light exercise for our tired bodies. All was well, my legs were finally starting to loosen up after the lunges done on Monday.

And then my shoe sort of skidded on the sidewalk, mid-stride. You know those big, clumsy steps you take when you're trying to not fall on your face? I took two of them.

And then I fell. Not on my face,…

Banh Mi-Inspired Dinner

The banh mi experiment on Friday was a success. I guess they were technically banh mi-inspired sandwiches; regardless, they were tasty. A true banh mi is served on a baguette.

Yum!

I served the sandwiches with…

Working Out While You Work

Gardening is a matter of your enthusiasm holding up until your back gets used to it.  ~Author Unknown
The last two evenings I've spent shoveling mulch from a huge pile on the driveway into a wheelbarrow. Then the mulch was dumped in the backyard. This morning I will spend the morning spreading the mulch...I'm trying to not get too excited about it:) Also, please try to not be jealous as you think of me…

"The Best Kitchen Quick Tips"

I recently found this book in my Mom's Riverdale, New York kitchen.  "The Best Kitchen Quick Tips - 534 tricks, techniques, and shortcuts for the curious cook" is brilliant.  Compiled by the editors of Cook's Illustrated, this book logically lays out short cuts for preparing food, cleaning up, and kitchen efficiency.  I'd love to share some of my favorites with you in this post and in the future.…

3 Simple Steps to Strike Stress & Overwhelm from Your Vocabulary (and your life)

took an extra day off after the July 4th holiday and by the end of the day realized that I hadn’t programmed much R&R!  I was busy working on stuff.  (Okay, in full disclosure – I was getting ready for a contest, which I just launched yesterday.  You’ll find out more below. )  However, even though I was busy prepping for my contest launch, I realized that I didn’t feel stressed or mad about not having downtime. And the reason… Read more

Every Little Bit Helps...

I take pride in the fact that I am a member of my gym's "Hall of Fame" three years running.  To become a "Hall of Fame" member you have to check-in at the gym 180+ times in one year.  Co-workers often comment when they see me in the elevator or in the lobby with my gym bag: "headed to the gym?" or "Wow! You are do dedicated, I wish I could find the time."  Simple fact is you can.  I schedule my gym time on my calendar from 3-4pm (I use my lunch hour) as if it is an appointment.  I know when…

what do you want to be used for?

Yesterday i had a lot of  worried/judgemental/stressed energy around me and i felt my own energy being taken over like a big wave swept up and sucked into itself and it got me saying that very evening, “i do not want to be used as a garbage for mind pollution. i do not want to be used in this way”. i felt pretty down about this situation and went…

Not so Novel Race Jitters

I have raced now for over five years of my life. I have run four half marathons and numerous shorter runs.

Why the heck then am I so nervous about tomorrow’s half marathon? I know why… normally I would have already done one half in addition to at least one 12k by now. And there’s the part where I have yet to…

A Day in the Life of an Aging Woman

I was at the dentist yesterday.  It seems that the enamel is wearing off of my teeth.  It is not due to lack of dental hygiene.  That is excellent.  Too excellent!  Am I brushing my gums and enamel right off?  Obsessive compulsive behavior of the teeth?  Okay, come on back down to reality, lady.

It is just another sign of aging.  Gums receding and that leads to exposure of softer enamel which lead to corrosion and exposure of roots....blah, blah, blah....  Roman (my dentist -…
