7 Ideas for a Less Stressful Holiday Season

Last year I wrote Stop the (Holiday) Madness with the focus on giving a gift to the environment by reducing waste. This year I am inspired to focus on giving a gift to ourselves by reducing stress. I'm already feeling the holiday energy in the air. Christmas decorations have been out for weeks now, shopping has already begun, and neighbors have begun to hang their holiday lights. Black Friday and…

Power of Juicing For Detox and Beauty

I consider juicing to be my fountain of youth. The juice of organic vegetables will not only speed up the process of detoxification, it will flood your body with enzymes, vitamins and minerals for quick absorption….and greatly benefit the immune system.

It’s a win-win!

Check out today’s video below to learn more.…

Cleansing and Detoxing: Fad or For Real?

“4 WEEKS TO YOUR BEST SELF”

“28 DAYS TO HEALTH”

“DETOX WITH YOUR DOCTOR”

You've probably seen ad headlines similar to the above. It seems that everyone is cleansing these days. I must admit that I was a bit skeptical at first because it seemed like my friends were either doing it for the wrong reasons ("I need to fit into a bathing suit for my trip to Hawaii") or they weren't really doing it right ("I'm doing the cleanse except that I'm drinking coffee, having a few…

a glass of green juice

Fresh Restaurant is one of my favourite spots in Toronto. They have a huge vegetarian menu, which appeals to carnivores and vegans alike. I'm also drawn to their equally large juice and smoothie menu. There are so many great fruit and veggie combos so I've never had the same one twice.

I purchased their cookbook a few months ago and have tried a few of the…

Losing weight and feeling... tired!

Day 4 complete for me!

I have definitely felt the challenge on my first week. I feel satisfied after each meal, but ravaging for food about 2 hours later. I am also very tired and needing more sleep than normal.

Also, I have lost 6.5 lbs since I started this challenge. Anyone else dropping weight?

Looking forward to week 2 - ready for some carbs!  :)

Gluten-Dairy Detox

The last time I went gluten free it was on the advice of my naturopath. Months before she had found that I had a food sensitivity to gluten. She indicated that reducing the dairy in my diet, which she had previously identified as a food sensitivity had allowed her to detect the gluten sensitivity. At first I just tried to limit gluten, then she advised that gluten may affect fertility. So in the months leading up to my pregnancy, I eliminated gluten from my diet, and kept limiting my dairy. I… Read more

Hungry like a Wolf

Yesterday I had a mango carrot smoothie for breakfast. It's not the one from the detox list but it is the one from the Whole Living site. I figured I was missing the protein from the detox one so I ate some nuts and then a hardboiled egg. I'm not very good with sticking to recipes, especially when it comes to including two leaves of kale. I'll just have to include some more greens in my lunch.

Lunch was grilled chicken breast with stir fried vegetables. Bok choy, broccoli, green… Read more

Nutritional Cleansing for your body - the best way to "reboot" and "rebuild"

Greetings everyone and wishing you a wonderful summer day!  I was going through a detox/cleansing day today and enjoying how empowered I feel over food, I thought I’d send along this link to some great information about nutritional cleansing.

If you are getting sick of those hamburgers and summer ice cream cones yet – check it out.  Even if you’re not getting sick of them – check it out – and make a plan to start soon!  I promise, there is no better way to Reboot and…

Reboot: Day 1 Recap

Somehow I managed to make it through yesterday as a semi successful day one of the reboot.

Food: I managed to eat only lowfat proteins, no gluten, no dairy, no soy, etc. yesterday. Most importantly, no processed! I started off the day with a bit of a tummy ache from a few too many indulgences over the weekend and ended the day feeling rehydrated and refreshed. Quinoa and fresh berries for breakfast leads to a day of feeling revitalized.

Movement: I’m training…

Fitness Assessment

Cardio Endurance: 94bpm

Arm Strength: 40 pushup max

Core Strength: Passed but difficult

Flexibility: 0"

I know I need to work on my flexibility. That's always been the case for me.

I have always had a very strong upper body,  but it comes in the shape of boxy and bulky rather than lean. I can probably bench press 70lbs, but the girl I share a cube with has arms that are very lean, so when she flexes, she looks like she has a lot of muscle,…

soy, the final detox frontier

Ok, last detox-related post! I was surprised by how much I missed soy these past two weeks. I know there is a lot of controversy out there about soy and how much of it is ok to consume, etc. But ever since we've reduced our meat consumption, we've added more soy to our diet in the form of tofu and tempeh. And delicious, processed chocolate soy milk. That stuff is addicting!

Detox? Stress Relief?? Whazzat???

I must confess to feeling a little out of the loop on these topics.  I say I'll commit to "today's challenge" (most days), because usually there's some portion of the challenge that strikes me as an improvement I could make.  But it strikes me that these challenges are targeted at women whose lives became stressed out,  or who overindulged, during the ubiquitous Holidays, and much as I hate to sound smug -- that's not me.

Smugness has nothing to do with it,…

Grateful For Prepped Staples In My Fridge

The majority of my symptoms seem to be on their way out, but the cough is still running me ragged. My core is sore from coughing and I feel wobbly from lack of appetite. However, I am very grateful for the home made chicken stock and cooked brown rice in the fridge. I combined those two for lunch today. My time has been spent reading and knitting - definitely low stress, which I am grateful for as well. I know this bug will pass soon and I will be able to participate in more active things. I… Read more

Know Thyself!

I am not sure if it is wheat or sugar, but one of them makes my joints ache. I know because this is not the first time I have done a detox and found that I never have joint paint as soon as I take these 2 ingredients off of my menu. That said it might be one or the other. I would not know since I always take them out of my diet and add them back, usually in the form of bread and jam, at the same time!

I am going to take advantage of this detox by adding back bread first to see what…

Snow Daze

Three snow days. That's all it took to knock me entirely off the challenge. With three young children at home, there was no time to plan for or prepare new recipes. Assuming the Cat/Cow pose was seen as an open offer to give horsey rides. My husband was also on the road, so a self-pitying me took refuge in a cache of truly lovely chocolates and cheeses left over from the holidays. (I guess that's why I was supposed to clean out my cabinets before Day 1.)

On the plus side, we got in…

Yay! I Ate Some Solid Food Today!

Wow did yesterday lay me low! This flu thing is the pits! Hacking and coughing should count as core muscle exercises. I stayed in bed all day yesterday, wobbling to the kitchen a couple of times - the first being for a glass of carrot, melon and fennel juice. The next time I was a little more ambitious and made a smoothie - banana, avocado, kiwi with bee pollen and pineapple juice. By the time I got back into the bed after that venture, my head was definitely on the route to spinning. For…

gluten, gluten, gluten (thoughts & links)

I don't think that I don't have any sensitivity to gluten. After faithfully abstaining from it for seven full days and then not-so-gradually reintroducing it back in to my diet, I haven't had any issues, digestive or otherwise. I know it can take awhile for symptoms to show themselves, but as I've never noticed any side effects from consuming gluten, I'm going to assume I'm in the safe zone.…

Ready to Start!!

I pretty much avoided even looking at the Whole Living site up until this week. In France we only just celebrated Epiphany this weekend... which means that... after Christmas, after New Year, we still had the Cake of Kings (Galette du Roi) to eat. It has to be my favorite desert in the world. i don't know if it is the flaky crust and creamed almond filling or just the fact that you can only find it once a year that makes me crave it so.

Looking over everyone's blogs, I have…

Last Night My Boyfriend Cooked Dinner for Me

Yes, the same boyfriend that has been tormenting me with pizza and chinese food.

This flu/cold yuck has seriously been kicking my hieny. Yesterday we went to the grocery store so I could stock up on foods for this week. I got some whole wheat pasta and some turkey and some chicken. YAY! The store wandering took it out of me though, and by the time we got home and got everything into the house and all of the bags to the kitchen all I could do was slump onto the couch in a…
