The old adage that “it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it” may not be totally true – at least when it comes to getting in shape. Recently, fitness clothing manufacturers have introduced a whole new line of garments designed specifically to increase the benefits of your workouts or even help you lose weight passively. So the next time you’re looking for a way to burn more calories, consider hitting the gym in some of these cool new garments.
1) Weighted Shoes. Weighted shoes function on a very basic principle – the more weight you have to lug around on a day-to-day basis, the more calories you’ll burn. Footwear such as PowerDiet shoes help you lose weight and tone up your calves by forcing you to walk around with heavy plastic insoles all day. Of course, if you don’t want to invest in a whole new pair of shoes you can always pick up a string of attachable weights for your favorite cross-trainers instead.
2) Resistance Tights. Resistance tights take spandex to a new extreme. These tights are so, well, tight that they restrict your movement, forcing you to exert more effort to do things like walking and running. These mega-spanx actually work, too. An independent study by the University of Virginia found that women running uphill on a treadmill burned 30% more calories when wearing toning tights. The best part is that you can wear them everywhere – under your work pants, your blue jeans or even your pajamas. They’ll help you burn calories faster and make you look about five pounds slimmer to boot.
3) Weighted Vests. Weighted vests aren’t exactly fashionable, but if you’ve only got two weeks to squeeze into your prom dresses for 2013, these heavy garments are a must have. Weighted vests make working out a misery – you’re going to sweat and you’re going to struggle. However, it’s important to remember that in the world of personal fitness, misery equals results. Wearing one of these vests while you run, lift or just walk about will help you incinerate extra calories.
4) Toning Shoes. Toning shoes use a large, rocker-shaped sole to force you to work out your calves more when you walk. Though they aren’t as effective in terms of weight loss as just strapping some weights to your feet, they’re a great way to tone up your legs and calves in preparation for dress and skirt season. Additionally, many of these shoes are comfortable enough that they can be worn throughout the day, whether you’re working out or not.
Don’t fly solo on your mission to lose weight this season. Use these creative garments to help you burn more calories and get in even better shape.
