I take pride in the fact that I am a member of my gym's "Hall of Fame" three years running. To become a "Hall of Fame" member you have to check-in at the gym 180+ times in one year. Co-workers often comment when they see me in the elevator or in the lobby with my gym bag: "headed to the gym?" or "Wow! You are do dedicated, I wish I could find the time." Simple fact is you can. I schedule my gym time on my calendar from 3-4pm (I use my lunch hour) as if it is an appointment. I know when the "meeting reminder" goes off, it is "me time!" Sure, there are days when work deadlines take precedence but I find a way to get some form of exercise in (which for me, the alternative would be to walk from work to the bus station to go home -approx. 2.5 miles).
Being active doesn't just mean going to the gym. This is just my exercise of choice. I often ask people if they are able to go before/after work or on weekends. If time isn't on their side, I usually suggest other ways to incorporate some form of exercise. Examples would be taking the stairs versus the elevator, parking farther away from the building/door or getting off at a stop earlier on the bus/train and walk farther to work. On weekends they can walk around their neighborhood or even a local highschool might have an outdoor track they could use.
It might sound small but every little bit helps. These ideas are just scratching the surface. I hope if people see what I am doing, my dedication and advice will lead them down a healthier path in the choices they make regarding exercise.

Comment by Kristen Sullivan on July 30, 2011 at 6:42pm Thanks for the comments. Amoura: You can always ask and if they don't, perhaps it is something they could implement? Another added bonus for me is through my work health insurance, if I have checked in at least 50 times for the time periods of Jan-June, I get reimbursed $200. The same scenario after July-Dec. I have to say in July I haven't done that great due to work being busy but I try to bike or run on the weekends to make up for it.
The reminder usually keeps me on track and I feel as though it is an appointment that I can't miss.
To add Terri, I've read that people that are active throughout the day and standing (like teachers or mail carriers) are generally a healthier weight than those that have desk jobs even if those with desk jobs burn more calories at one point during the day through exercise. The moral of the story = the more often we are active, the healthier we will be!
