I'm lagging a bit behind the timing of the challenge, so today is day 1 of my detox... and strangely enough I'm really looking forward to it. But first things first, without recording my baseline, there will be no satisfaction in seeing the effect of the improvements I make to my lifestyle over the next few days and weeks. As of today:

age: 30
height: 5'8" (I know that this isn't likely to change... but it's a vital stat so in it goes!)
weight: 149 lbs

endurance: 128bpm - poor (this was a surprise, but more about that later)

arm strength: 26 modified push-ups - average/good (the yoga and push-ups have been paying off!)

core strength: not bad, I managed the first 3 steps and collapsed before the arm/leg lifts (now I have something to work on!)

flexibility: 4.75" (totally excellent, dude! as Bill & Ted would say)

You know, all this things considered, this is not a bad start. In fact, it's almost perfect. There are clearly some areas that need some work (endurance), some that are pretty good but I can improve (arm and core strength), and some good news (flexibility). A nice balance to stop me from feeling discouraged at the outset.

Weight loss is not the primary goal for me. Admittedly I have been trying to lose 10lbs for the last 3 months, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the stress I have been putting myself under with that goal in mind has been counter-productive. Cooking has become my new hobby, partly because I can't afford to eat out as often as I used to, and partly because I am a strict vegetarian and can cook myself much better meals at home than I can find at most restaurants around Boston (or anywhere in the US it seems). So this detox is a great opportunity for me to try some new things. I put millet in my chilli last night instead of bulgur, and I have a bag of amaranth to play with. It's going to be fun!

I sat up last night a planned my meals for the next 4 days with military precision... well not quite but I did write all down, spend a ton at the grocery store to make sure I had all the things I'm going to need, and attempt to decide what I would eat each day to make the whole process easier. I woke up this morning, looked at my plan, decided that I didn't want pineapple/avocado gazpacho after all and am about to make the mango smoothie. Let's see how the next few days play out.
