Spring is here, so I thought it was time for a new vacuum. Being a bad shopper, I went straight to Overstock.com and searched for the cheapest option. Voila! The Electrolux UltraSilencer Green Vacuum Cleaner at $231.99 came up--cheap, and to my delight, green.(Here's what makes it green: the canister is produced with 55-percent of plastic from recycled materials, 80 percent of the packaging is from recycled unbleached cardboard, a washable HEPA filter, and a high-efficiency motor.)

It arrived today, and it's fantasic. What is your best green electrical buy?

Its not exactly an electrical buy, but I really like these Casabella microfiber dusters that are made from recycled soda bottles (http://www.casabella.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Sto...). You can also throw the microfiber part in the wash. Perfect for me, because I am really allergic to dust and living in NYC, everything gets a layer of dust on it about once a week (ew, how is that?).

Anyway, I recently went to the Green Depot and was in hippie/recycling-eco-nut heaven. I also bought these AMAZING shower curtains that totally dont offgas and theyre safe for you. They can also be thrown in the wash AND you can doodle on them. Yes, I am a graphic designer and I like to doodle away after a nice hot shower. They rule. http://www.greendepot.com/greendepot/product.asp?s_id=0&pf_id=T...

Funny. I, too, have a green vacuum. It's not eco-friendly in the least. I bought it with cash on my commissions that I earned from selling jewelry at ladies' parties, years ago. I bought it because it looked like an emerald-colored spaceship, like something out of Buck Rogers, and I had visions of myself zipping around my apartment entranced in my household chore. No such luck.

Five years later, and it's got all the sucking strength of an 80-year-old man with emphysema. I'd have better luck if I blew the cat hair around on the room on my hands and knees. But I cannot part with the beloved thing, so it sits parked in the darkest corner of my closet, wishing it were a space-age household appliance, and not weak and wheezing excuse for a vacuum.
