Greening My Life: Part 1 Beauty Products

I’m on a mission to “green” every part of my life. This is clearly not something that will happen overnight and it will take a lot of adjustments over a long period of time. This is something I’ve wanted to do for awhile but it is overwhelming for me to even figure out where to begin.  I read a few books that detail all the things that you currently have and what the problem is with them. One night I literally had to stop reading because I started to freak out about all the stuff in my house that was potentially “bad” for me.  While I may want to, one thing I will not do is throw out all our conventional items for “greener” items; that’s a bit wasteful. Instead I will evaluate all my purchases and when something needs to be replaced I’ll replace it with a “greener” option.

My latest challenge is makeup and beauty products. First off, I’m not a big girly-girl. I don’t wear a lot of makeup and I’m not really a products person. It’s not because I don’t like that stuff; I just feel like I don’t have time to actually use it! When it came time to replace my makeup which consists of eye liner, mascara, and pressed powder I searched for a product that was truly natural. What I found is that many of these “natural” and “organic” products really are not! After doing some research I found that a lot of ingredients that are banned all over the world for a variety of toxicities are actually still used in a lot of our products here. I ended up with 100% Pure products because I can actually read the ingredients and several sources recommended it. The products look really good and they last just as long as conventional products. I have the coconut body wash as well which smells nice. I plan on trying their lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and baby wash for my kids as soon as we run out of what we have now. My only quirk with them is that they run out of stock very often.  Oh, and if anyone likes nail polish, I swear by Zoya which is another great product! My toes are always painted but I don’t bother with my finger nails since I do so much gardening! Zoya is a vegan product and free of many of the chemicals that can be in nail polish and they have hundreds of colors.

I do want to try some DIY lotions and facial washes but haven’t had time yet. Are you a products person? Do you have a favorite brand that you use on a regular basis? If anyone has some great recommendations for organic or natural body care or makeup products I’d love to hear them!

That sounds great! I'm definitely going to try some DIY products. I saw the berry mask in the most recent issue of Whole Living......all the DIY products seem great. I mean, how great is it to really know what you are putting on your body!?!

Not laughing at all - it is the same thing. Long story about how I discovered it could be used in your hair. And today I gave myself a facial with just honey - slathered it on and rinsed it off 10 minutes later and couldn't believe how fantastic my skin looked. Who needs beauty products? Lol!

Another Zoya fan...I love it  :-) OK Nikki, don't think I'm nuts, but when you say organic coconut oil, is that just like the one you cook with?!?!? I've seen it at my grocery store but I don't know if that is the same kind. Seriously, don't laugh......LOL. :-)

Oh I love love love Zoya nail polish.  And like you I always have my toes done but not my hands because of gardening, cleaning, etc....

One tip that I do have is to use organic coconut oil instead of moisturizer.  Because it is solid at room temperature, your body heat melts just enough when you run your finger over it and you don't end up all greasy.

Michelle, it is really overwhelming and frustrating when you think you found a non-toxic product but in reality you've wasted money on a toxic product. I want to try Aubrey Organics, I always see their ads in Whole Living and Natural Health magazine. I have Desert Essence chap stick and I love it. I hear you about the primer and I have to say I look at this the same way I do food. Moderation. It's really tough in my opinion to go 100% all natural, right? I'll see what other challenges I come upon as I try to apply the "green" method to my whole life  :-)
