Growing up, I saw my dad very sick for several years. And as the years passed, he got worse. There is a lot of research and information available on Type 2 diabetes - ways to maintain, ways to medicate, was to keep your life as yours and not as an identifying marker. The fact of the matter is, and has been for at least 25 years, the way to deal with Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and high cholesterol is with the one-two punch: diet and exercise.

Medicine can help, true. But how much easier is it to prevent a problem than it is to treat it? There are genetic factors to all of the above disorders, but why not work with your body instead of against it?

On the days when I'm stressed or tired or just not motivated to do anything, I know I need to make my way to the kitchen and put together a healthy lunch and dinner for my husband. Doing so, fulfilling my responsibility to care for him, I'm caring for myself as well. That's part of the responsibility of marriage, taking care of each other. Show your family members (and yourself) just how much you love them by what you put on their plates and in their lunch bags. Take 30 minutes each day to yourself to move to fulfill your responsibility to yourself.

Sure, it seems like more work when you look at it from this side. But trust me, it's a lot easier than managing a disease or watching your loved ones slowly degenerate. Put in the work now and you'll reap the benefits later.
