There is a reason why some call me Duchess.....by duchess Today i drove up to mom's and I was surprised at how much she accomplished since I left her yesterday. The woman is amazing!! I immediately took my things inside and grabbed a big cup of water and went about my merry way to my garden.

Task #1. Pull the sunflowers, and harvest the seeds OK - if you haven't harvested sunflowers - if you haven't pulled sunflower plants - LISTEN UP. Get a man to do the job, a man that needs a little garden whooping. Holy Thunder I was a bit miffed at how difficult it was to pull those cute flowers out of my garden soil. Chickens LOVE sunflower heads, so after I harvest the seeds from all the heads I cut off, I'll give them to our chickens. (Even though they misbehaved and RAN away today)

Here are a few things I didn't know about sunflowers:

 1. They are sticky, i mean sticky I could have glued chicken feathers to my arms and started a new feather trend today

 2. They are devils. They have these sharp think like thorns that just tap into your skin to be annoying and painful all at the same time, give me skin to tattoo or pierce, it's easier to handle than a whole lotta sunflower pokes.

3. They are most definitely TRAP plants. You should keep them in your garden, I found more bugs and some of the ugliest looking bugs, it was at that moment I decided that tomorrow on my second day of sunflower harvesting I would wear long sleeves, boots, and pants with a big hat. If they work that hard to keep bugs off my garden plants - I will love them with all their annoying issues they left me with today. (A shower doesn't take those pokey things off)

I used a shovel to dig out the stalks, and these weren't even the BIG sunflowers! I sat down with my mom and made our garden budgets and sketched out my garden....and got a good price on a pallet of bricks. Look out ladies, Duchess might be prissy but she's a warrior inside....

I was going to plant sunflowers this year but wasn't able to get my horribly rocky soil  prepared in time.  Whatever tips you have for me to file away for next year, keep them coming!
