My two college age daughters have both gone through attempts at eating vegetarian. To make this work, they will have to give up the following:

  1. Some of their time, and actually cook or prepare something, instead of going through the drive-thru.
  2. Their pickiness. Both of them have issues with food textures.
  3. Their love of convenience and having someone clean up after them.
  4. One of them will have to dispel her notion that eating in the cafeteria is uncool. That is the healthiest food choices on campus.
  5. One of them needs to dump the boyfriend who does not support her food choice, and sabotages it every chance he gets.

Interestingly, meat is not a prominent item in the meals I cook at home, mainly because I don't care for it. Maybe that deprivation is what drove them to eating meat elsewhere...

I don't think so -- I think a decision like that can only affect in a positive way. Case in point, when I was growing up, my parents did not "believe" in junk food, so it was never in the house. Sure, I got my fix elsewhere, but I also learned to appreciate the benefits of raw vegetables, and I've always preferred them.

Ugh, that's a bummer about the boyfriend. My cousin, who has struggled with her weight, has a similar problem. Her boyfriend is a terrible eater, and I know it's going to be hard for her to lose weight because of him. And of course, he'll never give up the Chinese... But, I think if she really made the commitment, she could talk with him, and after some prodding, he'd be more considerate... But she has to make the commitment as much as he does! Even if means a little nagging from time to time. ;)
