My yoga instructor is teaching a summer outdoor yoga series as an effort to raise money for a local foster child support organization. It is donation based, come as you are, and is in different parks every couple of weeks. Tonight was the first session in a park overlooking Lake Union back at down town Seattle.

Since I live in such a great but rainy city, I’ve only ever practiced yoga outside once or twice before. Tonight, throughout the vinyasa class, I set the intention of unwinding from my stressful day at work. With each pose I breathed in the fresh air and breathed out the day’s pressures.

It felt wonderful, and after class I really felt cleansed in a different way than I usually do after class. I think this is both because of my intention and also the fresh air. When I opened my eyes after savasana, the bluest sky I’ve seen in months greeted me. It felt great.

Does anyone else do yoga outdoors regularly? Any other series in parks going on that folks are enjoying this summer?

I have done yoga outdoors and on the beach which was a real treat! The calming yoga poses along with the ocean breeze and positive ions in the air...I totally agree about feeling cleansed, the fresh air...I loved your line "I breathed in the fresh air and breathed out the day's pressures.." exactly why I love and connect to yoga! Thanks for sharing!

I haven't done yoga outside but there is no reason not to!  I did enjoy an outdoor workout (boot camp style) two mornings a week at a park close by.  That was great!  Nothing like rolling around in the dew damp grass first thing in the morning - really wakes up the senses!  I think the idea of yoga outside is a wonderful one provided you have a location where you feel private (and safe) enough.  Yoga for me is a quieter more introspective form of exercise and I would find it distracting I think to practice somewhere that was too busy.  Mind you, it would be a good exercise in letting the distractions flow into your mind and out as gently without interrupting the flow of your practice.  A good exercise within itself I guess!
